The H. George Frederickson Award honors a senior scholar whose career represents a sustained and significant contribution to the intellectual development of public management research.

2025 H. George Frederickson Award

The Public Management Research Association is proud to recognize Richard Walker of Lingnan University as the recipient of this year’s H. George Frederickson Award for Career Contributions to Public Management Research.

Eligibility

Eligible nominees are scholars whose careers demonstrate influential written scholarship and meaningful professional service, including but not limited to activities such as journal leadership, association service, conference engagement, mentoring, and field development.

Nominees must be current members of the Public Management Research Association (PMRA) or be willing to become members in order to receive the award. Nominators are expected to inform nominees of the nomination and confirm eligibility prior to submission.

Application Process

Nominations will be accepted January 1 through February 1, 2026.

Nominations must include:

  • A PDF copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae
  • A letter describing the nominee’s career contributions

In the recommendation letter, please discuss:

How the nominee’s work has impacted the trajectory of scholarship in the field, including but not limited to:

  • Contributions that called attention to understudied concepts or challenges
  • Contributions that demonstrate sensitivity to cultural, institutional, and political contexts
  • Contributions that have been used to advance understanding across diverse contexts

How the nominee has made professional capital contributions, including but not limited to:

  • Service to relevant professional associations, including PMRA
  • Contributions to scholarly journals
  • Departmental or university leadership
  • Mentoring of doctoral students and junior faculty
  • Contributions to the practice of public and nonprofit management

Letter writers are encouraged to consult with colleagues familiar with the nominee’s scholarly and professional contributions so that multiple perspectives are represented.

 

Assessment Criteria

Nominees are evaluated based on:

  • Scholarly contributions to the development of public management research
  • Professional service and leadership that strengthen the field
  • Evidence of mentoring and dissemination of scholarship

The Award Committee may also consider other individuals who, in its judgment, merit consideration.

Award & Recognition

The award will be presented at the 2026 Public Management Research Conference, June 4–6, 2026, at American University in Washington, D.C.

A commemorative plaque is presented to the recipient.
