New Editor Sought for the Jounal of Public Administration Research and Theory

The Public Management Research Association has issued a request for proposals for Editor of the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory

The Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory serves as a bridge between public administration or public management scholarship and public policy studies. The Journal aims to provide in-depth analysis of developments in the organizational, administrative, and policy sciences as they apply to government and governance. Each issue brings you critical perspectives and cogent analyses, serving as an outlet for the best theoretical and research work in the field.

The Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory is the official journal of the Public Management Research Association. In the 2006 ISI Journal Citation Reports JPART is ranked 2nd out of 23 journals in the category of Public Administration with an impact factor of 1.655. While JPART is one of the younger journals in the field its reputation and status in the field is extremely strong. It has growing visibility both in the US and globally. The term of service for the editor is five years in duration beginning in January 2009. We expect and welcome bids from individuuals who are interested in the role.

The Role of the Editor
The editor of JPART is expected to be an established scholar in the field and someone who is not identified with a single set of methods or issues. Given the wide range of articles included in the journal that individual should be someone who understands the breadth of the public administration field and is conversant and knowledgeable about the diverse scholars in the public administration community. In addition, the editor is expected to be responsive to the individuals who submit manuscripts to the journal and able to provide constructive feedback to those individuals.

The editor will also be responsible for a range of organizational and managerial functions. These include appointing members of the board of editors, appointing associate or co-editors, appointing a book review editor, and creating an oversight system that defines the role of the editors.

Criteria for Selection
There are a range of criteria that will be used to assess proposals.

  • A statement by the prospective editor about that individual’s visions and goals for the journal. That should include information about their expected outcomes and ideas for additions or improvements in the journal

  • A letter from the relevant Dean or other administrator that indicates willingness to provide support for the editor.. The nature and level of support has varied from one editor and institution to another, including reductions in teaching load, dedicated research assistance, space, telephone, and computer facilities.

  • Evidence that the individual has the ability to continue the on-line submission and review process, has relevant organizational experience, and has knowledge of PMRA and the editorial board. Oxford University Press has provided reliable software and the structure for manuscript management.

Proposals will be considered after May 1, 2008 and a decision will be made as soon as possible after that. They should be sent electronically to the chair of the committee (bradin@ix.netcom.com). The committee includes: Beryl Radin (chair), Fran Berry, Carolyn Heinrich, Rosemary O’Leary and Frank Thompson. Questions about the position can be addressed to any of the members of the committee (two former editors are on the committee).
